About this coin

Britannia

The Royal Mint's silver Britannia was first issued in 1997. Until 2012 it was struck in Britannia silver (95.8%); since 2013 it has been 99.9% fine.

Recent coins carry advanced anti-counterfeiting features. As UK legal tender with a £2 face value, Britannias are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents, which is a big reason for their popularity in Britain.

Britannia: FAQ

How much is a Britannia worth today?

Based on today's silver price (13 Oct 2026), the silver in a Britannia is worth about $59.54, or ₹6,567 at the Indian market rate. This is the melt value. Dealers and jewellers sell above it and usually buy slightly below it.

How much silver is in a Britannia?

A Britannia weighs 31.21 g at 99.9% purity, so it contains 31.18 g of pure silver (1.0024 troy oz).

Is a Britannia worth more than its silver value?

Usually, yes: bullion and collectible coins sell at a premium over melt value because of minting, distribution and collector demand. Common, circulated coins trade close to melt, while rare dates, mint marks and high grades can be worth much more.

How do I know if I'm paying a fair price?

Enter the seller's price into the premium checker above. It compares the quote with the live metal value and shows the premium as a percentage. Compare that percentage between sellers before you buy.
